Crime Stoppers – Crime Of the Week – Break & Enters

Crime Stoppers and the Greenstone OPP are asking for your help in solving two separate Break & Enters that occurred in the town of Longlac.

Sometime between March 15th and March 24th 2014 someone broke into a residence on Centennial Drive. Entry was gained by removing a basement window at the rear of the residence. The suspect (s) removed the entire window from the frame. Nothing was taken from the residence but damage to the fence, the window and the window frame was done. This was the second time the residence had been broken into by the exact same way. The first time was in September of 2013.

Kenogamisis Fish and Game Celebrates 75 years

Kenogamisis Fish and Game has seen a multitude of different types of activities and events over the years. Swimming lessons were given at the beach by local life guards which were trained by the Red Cross. At that time there was a dock with a string of boueys to make sure kids didn’t swim out of bounds. Family picnics, including the mines Union family Picnic, the Firemen family picnics, multiple fish derbies, spaghetti suppers, annual father/son fish dinners, poker games, fish frys, stags, dance’s, including the “midnight dances”, and several other social and professional gatherings at the club house.

Geraldton and Nipigon hospitals formally discuss merger

The North West Local Health Integration Network (NW LHIN) has been conducting two to three Governance to Governance sessions each year for the past several years. At each session, the NW LHIN has encouraged health care providers to integrate services to ensure a seamless approach to patient care.

At the most recent Governance to Governance session held on January 27/14, the NW LHIN heavily encouraged integration at the Board level.

Harper Government Responds to the Growing Mining Activity in Northwestern Ontario

Governor General’s Academic Medal Award Announced

It is with pleasure that Mr. Luomala, Principal of Geraldton Composite High School, on behalf of His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston announces the recipient of the 2013-2014 Governor General’s Academic Bronze Medal.

Mary-Rose Mascotto has been awarded the medal upon achieving the highest average on graduation from Geraldton Composite High School. The average is based on the final two years of the secondary program. The secondary school must follow the provincial syllabus when awarding the Bronze Medal.

Katimavik is launching its first major fundraising campaign with DRUIDE, a manufacturer of certified organic cosmetics. Since the federal government ended its funding commitment, back in 2012, Katimavik has been active in developing new programs and financial partnerships.

Nipigon Withdraws from Nuclear Waste Burial Study

Following the release of an interim report from NWMO to the Township of Nipigon, at the June 17th council meeting its was decided tht Nipigon will no longer be considered as a potential host community for the proposed deep geological repository for nuclear waste.

Ford dealer to build new facilities in Hearst, Ont.

Lecours Motor Sales, Ford dealer in Hearst and Kapuskasing is pleased to announce the long awaited start of construction of its new dealership facilities in Hearst.

Designed to meet Ford’s new Millennium standards with its trademark tower entrance, the new 19,000 square foot facility will be unlike any average auto dealership. It will offer much larger areas to serve customers with a six vehicle showroom, the parts department will have over 10,000sq/ft of storage space spread over three floor levels, the service department will have ten repair bays each large enough to accommodate an F550 truck. Ginoogaming First Nation Revives Online Learning Centre

June11-vol69-no34-49Getting the Ginoogaming First Nation online learning centre revived has brought a little ray of hope for a number of young people in the community.

The First Step Program, a partnership between Contact North, Sioux Hudson Literacy Council’s Good Learning Anywhere Program, and First Nation Communities across Ontario, helps participants have access to culturally appropriate and relevant introduction to online learning.

The opportunity is available in the community to get acquainted with learning online, exploring strengths and skills, and then finding out about the available courses and programs they can access online and off campus.
